  1. Fine dining stakes claim in Berwyn

To corrupt an old saying, the good Lord never closes a condo without opening a bungalow.
To corrupt an old saying, the good Lord never closes a condo without opening a bungalow. Berwyn is on the rise. The financial crisis has turned the near west suburb into a hot spot of affordable housing, and young couples and families are crowding in....

  3. Go alfresco

Summer's here, and the time is right for eating in the street. Or near the street. Or in a bottle-service cabana high above the street.
Summer's here, and the time is right for eating in the street. Or near the street. Or in a bottle-service cabana high above the street. Chicagoans love outdoor-dining season, all the more so because of its short duration. There are precious few days in...

  5. Summer Eating List

Summer is the sweet season for restaurants. Fresh produce is abundant, daylight lasts longer and restaurants are busier and bigger (with the addition of outdoor seats) than at any other time of the year.

  9. Taste of Chicago returns

It's safe to say that nobody knows what to expect from this year's Taste of Chicago.
It's safe to say that nobody knows what to expect from this year's Taste of Chicago. Stripped down to five days from its usual 10, the number of food vendors trimmed to 40 (compared with 59 in 2011) and separated from its traditional Fourth of July...

  11. Eating strategically for health

Restaurant Michael in Winnetka feels a bit like stepping back into the famed Le Francais dining room in Wheeling, except it's cozier, a touch more casual, with brighter lighting and upbeat jazz gently playing on the speakers. It all makes sense because chef Michael Lachowicz cut his culinary teeth at Le Francais and in Lyon, France, but he is also a dedicated Harley rider who started working in his grandfather's family restaurant in Chicago at a very young age. His love of French cooking, the kind that is hearty, full-bodied and artistically satisfying, saturates the menu with such items as confit cabbage, pommes Anna, salade Lyonnaise and pork galantine. Just back from some R and R and a successful marriage proposal in Florida, Lachowicz and I talked over a plate of pates in his newest addition to the restaurant, a charming side dining room, complete with a fireplace. This is an edited version of that conversation.

  13. Top chefs have 'A Taste for the Arts'

Student performances and Top Chef stations were the main attractions at "A Taste for the Arts" benefiting the Chicago Academy of the Arts. More than 350 attended the free performances by students and alumni May 10 at the Harris Theater. The show opened and closed with the CAA Repertory Dance Company choreographed by Randy Duncan, CAA artistic director. Soloist Eleri Ward sang "Shy" from "Once Upon a Mattress"; alumna/soprano Jessica Oliver sang a piece from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino"; and classical pianist Su Jin Kang played Chopin. Rock band Semi Precious Weapons, featuring alumnus/frontman Justin Tranter, performed a high-energy number that had the crowd on its feet.

  15. Taste of Chicago plans to add celebrity-chef dining option

There's nothing like sitting down to a three-course meal prepared by a top-name chef. But at Taste of Chicago?
    Tribune critic
There's nothing like sitting down to a three-course meal prepared by a top-name chef. But at Taste of Chicago? If the City Council gives the OK, that could be an option in July. An ordinance going before the City Council Wednesday would allow the...

  17. Bar Toma: Italian fare inspires dreams of summertime dining

<a class=&quot;runtimeTopic" href="#">Tony Mantuano</a> is on a roll. A local politician who flies on Air Force One these days calls him "my favorite chef." He's in the running &mdash; again &mdash; for the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Chef award. His executive chef at Spiaggia, Sarah Grueneberg, came thisclose to winning Top Chef a week ago. His star power is such that last year Levy Restaurants happily blew up their venerable Bistro 110 (which probably needed overhauling) to let Mantuano create Bar Toma (as in TOny MAntuano), a casual-yet-urbane food and wine bar that seems to be a physical incarnation of "Wine Bar Food," the appetizer and wine book Mantuano wrote with his wife, Cathy.
