3. '03 lawsuit challenged work conditions

There are so many opportunities here of rare, rich experiences which I need to thank Chef Trotter for. From the housewives, doctors, and others who come to work as guest chefs to famous chefs like Tetsuya, Toque and Alain Ducasse. I've always learned and appreciated from these people who have a great passion for food. Cooking for inner-city students, talking to them … it's been a fulfilling experience to share and hopefully inspire. The recent trip to the Fancy Food Show in New York showed me how to reach excellence at every level — I think meeting The Red Hot Chili Peppers at Mercer's Lounge was the highlight of that trip!

5. Charlie Trotter preaches excellence to the extreme

Graham Elliot was an aspiring young cook in the late '90s carrying steaks to a party of 20 in the Charlie Trotter's Studio Kitchen when the restaurant's brilliant, mercurial owner stopped him in the hallway and grabbed one of the pieces of meat.

7. Alinea, Ria, Charlie Trotter's among Michelin-starred restaurants in 2012 Chicago guide

In Chicago’s dining scene, there is Alinea, and there is everybody else.
Tribune reporters
In Chicago’s dining scene, there is Alinea, and there is everybody else. That’s the message being conveyed in the 2012 Michelin Guide Chicago, whose star ratings were announced Tuesday afternoon. Only Alinea, which also earned three stars...

11. Lessons from a 'Top Chef'

Around this time last year, Beverly Kim was something of a minor television celebrity on "Top Chef." Several Saturdays ago, we found Kim calling out dinner orders from a cavernous and modern West Town kitchen, a space that would be the envy of every chef in town. This kitchen even has a 180-degree view of the Chicago skyline.

13. A potluck kind of year

If only it were so easy to pithily proclaim 2012 as the Year of the (fill-in-the-blank). But there's really no one thread that neatly ties together the Chicago restaurant scene these last 12 months. A restaurant that put Chicago on the culinary map 25 years ago closed its doors. Doughnuts became "a thing." Digging up mushrooms from the forest preserve took on high status.

15. 2012 bar and restaurant review: Highs, lows and delicious trends

When it comes to adventures in dining and drinking, Chicago definitely delivered this year. Hot chefs expanded their empires with new restaurants. New words made their way into our nightlife vocabulary. And, of course, there were doughnuts. And pie. And then more doughnuts. Here's a look back at 2012 and all the trends, talkers, highs and lows that came with it. Hope you're hungry!

So, your kid's going off to college. There's time for one last dinner out before you pack up the minivan. Where to go? The main goal should be to ensure the little brat misses you. So treat him to a meal that he won't be able to find near campus. A...
