  1. Fine dining stakes claim in Berwyn

To corrupt an old saying, the good Lord never closes a condo without opening a bungalow.
To corrupt an old saying, the good Lord never closes a condo without opening a bungalow. Berwyn is on the rise. The financial crisis has turned the near west suburb into a hot spot of affordable housing, and young couples and families are crowding in....

  3. Bring on brunch

Though Sunday brunch is a year-round option, warm and sunny weather is what brings out the crowds. I can attest to that, having spent most of the last 10 fairly miserable (weatherwise) weekends hitting one brunch after another; I don't think I found a single crowded dining room during all of February and March (Easter excepted), and reservations certainly were no problem. Brunch-friendly temperatures will be with us soon enough, and when they arrive, here are a few brunch spots, old and new, that will be worth checking out. Better still, visit them now, when tables are still easy to secure (Mother's Day excepted).

  5. Move is a real scream for Berwyn collectibles shop Horrorbles

You're alone in the far back corner of a basement on Roosevelt Road, the air choked with the dank smell of age. Above you, a Berwyn storefront. Around you, the cluttered office of its owner. What kind of maniac intentionally keeps his desk in the far back corner of a musty basement, removed from any possibility of sunlight, the otherworldly scream of a heating duct the only sound to keep him company?

  7. Let's break out the old crystal ball

Time once again for my annual exercise in humiliation, as I try to predict the star recipients in the 2013 Michelin Chicago Guide, which hits bookstores Wednesday.

  9. Michelin snubs: Spots the popular guide ignored

The 2013 Michelin Guide, published last week, awarded stars to 19 Chicago restaurants, and bestowed Bib Gourmands (signifying good restaurants that offer good value) to 19 more. And congratulations to each and every one. But recognizing 38 restaurants means not recognizing a whole bunch more.

  13. A claw of lobster dishes to kick off the season

Friday is National Lobster Day, kicking off the season when lobster fishermen start bringing in their largest hauls of this crustacean that inhabits the rocky bottom of the cold, clean waters off the Maine coast. Here is a sampling of a variety of dishes we've seen recently at local restaurants.
