  1. Should Obama have gone to Israel?

    President Obama flew to Israel on Wednesday to reassure Israelis that the U.S. will stand with them against their enemies. It’s his first visit to Israel as president, even though he visited Cairo a few years ago. He has sparred in the past with Prime Minister Netanyahu over issues such as settlements on the West Bank. Some have suggested that Mr. Obama’s trip was unnecessary if there's no hope of advancing Mideast peace. Others have said the president needs to pay his respects to Israel as head of state and that his visit will make the region more secure. What’s your view?

  3. Israel needs a new map

    Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has just formed a new government in Israel. But nothing of substance will change. Peace negotiations will not resume; settlement activity will expand; war with Iran will still be threatened; and Israel will move even closer to becoming an international pariah. When President Obama speaks to the Israeli public, he will no doubt treat his counterpart cordially, but that won't mute the shocking honesty of what he has already said: An Israeli government led by Netanyahu cannot be a partner for productive peace talks.

    <span class=&quot;runtimeTopic">WASHINGTON</span> -- One of Ben Rhodes&rsquo; first tasks when he followed Barack Obama to the White House in 2009 was to help craft the presidential speech, delivered in Cairo, that urged a restart of Mideast peace talks, called America&rsquo;s alliance with Israel &ldquo;unbreakable&rdquo; and described Palestinian statelessness as &ldquo;intolerable.&rdquo;

  7. Low expectations for Obama's Israel visit

    President Obama will arrive in Israel on Wednesday for his first visit since being elected in 2008. We wish him the best, but frankly, we have very low expectations. Indeed, it's hard to figure out why he's making the trip at all. The peace process...

  9. Why is Obama going to Israel?

    President Obama is visiting Israel this week, the first foreign trip of his second term. Some commentators have criticized the tour as a diversion from the president's intention to pivot toward the Asia-Pacific region. Why go to Israel now, they ask, and anger the Arabs at a time of rising Middle Eastern turmoil? Others claim that the trip is merely a maneuver designed to achieve some memorable photo-ops rather than to advance crucial American interests.
