5. Too much spirit can make you stagger

One of the baffling aspects of Christian faith lies in the concept of the Triune God. It provides that God is One Being, a Spirit, but when Jesus came to earth, as the Son of God who walked as a human being, it was He who said that God was His Father and that the two of them form One. After the crucifixion, and several different “appearings” designed, perhaps, to spread the evidence of His resurrection, He took His disciples to a favorite place and there, while they watched, He ascended into the heavens. Before that stunning event took place. He assured them He was not leaving them alone. His Spirit, not a visible presence, but a consistent presence of support, affirmation, impulses of right and wrong, etc., would levitate as the “hovering of heaven” and reach into the hearts of those who both sought and accepted Divine presence. The Spirit, God’s presence on earth, and equal in every respect to the Father-Son equality, is thus defined as the third aspect of what is theologically defined as the Triune (three facets) God.

  17. Children's organic clothing: Fashions for a small planet

When my son was born three years ago, we received an olive green romper embroidered with a tiny red elephant, an outfit that came from a children's boutique specializing in a line of handmade, local and eco-friendly clothing and toys. No matter how many times we washed it, the cotton remained soft and vibrant — and the romper stayed that way through wearings by two friends' babies.

  19. Southern California Close-Ups: From West Hollywood to Wilshire

Set an out-of-towner loose to roam the Los Angeles area between West Hollywood and Koreatown and what can you expect? A food-truck overdose, perhaps. Or the bold suggestion that we extend our subway system westward. (Hey, we're working on it.) Or maybe just your basic Asian-Russian-Latino-gay-vegetarian-barbecue-automotive-modernist-tar-pit-chili-dog weekend.
