  1. 'Take This Waltz' explores the five-year itch: Can love and desire endure? ★★★

Five years into their marriage, the freelance Toronto writers played by Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen in "Take This Waltz" have drifted, rudderless, into a harbor that is anything but safe.

  3. Metz: Toronto trio is all out, all the time

A few weeks ago, the Toronto trio Metz was played a midafternoon gig at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas, with such fury that the welt-inducing performance left me questioning the band members’ physical well-being and sanity. Alex Edkins was wrestling his guitar to the ground like it was a writhing alligator. Chris Slorach was pogoing while screwing his bass guitar into an amplifier. Drummer Hayden Menzies was pounding so hard it sounded like he was banging on industrial oil drums instead of a trap kit. They carried on like this for 10-plus minutes as they torched a song called “Wet Blanket.” How the heck do they play this passionately every night while on tour?

  5. Toronto's Hollywood juggernaut can't swamp indie pleasures

In "Argo," one of the leanest satisfactions of this year's massive Toronto International Film Festival, director and star Ben Affleck anchors a movie based on the true story about how Central Intelligence Agency operative Tony Mendez faked his way into Iran following the 1979 hostage crisis posing as a film producer scouting locations for a Canadian science-fiction film called "Argo." Under that cover story, Mendez engineered the rescue of six American hostages, themselves posing as part of the fake film crew.

  7. Jeff Lemire, super writer

On page 12 of issue No. 1 of DC Comics' latest reiteration of "Constantine," which tells the ongoing story of John Constantine — a.k.a. Hellblazer, the publisher's three-decade-old, morally slippery sorcerer/sleuth to the occult world (played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 "Constantine" movie) — an airline stewardess explodes. Sure, she slips poison into Constantine's drink just before exploding; and sure, she kind of chants something to herself in the plane's lavatory, resulting in self-immolation. But in one panel she explodes; and in the next, Constantine, stone faced, is straightening his tie in the lavatory mirror, apparently unimpressed.

  9. McManus: Tax reform that hits home

Would you support a tax reform measure that could help reduce the federal deficit, remove a needless distortion in the economy and make the system fairer?

  11. Any intercontinental low-fare airlines?

Despite the huge growth of low-fare airlines such as Southwest, JetBlue, and others, you don't see any low-fare lines to Asia or southern South America. Although a few transatlantic lines lay claim to the "low fare" label, they're very limited.

  13. What Chicago can learn from Toronto

TORONTO - At Luminato, the festival of arts, culture and ideas that just concluded in Canada's largest city, one message rings the loudest and clearest: This festival was created "to shine Toronto's light on the world and the world's light on Toronto." You can't say it much clearer than that.
