  1. How To Handle Your Child's Night Terrors

We are all familiar with bad dreams and nightmares, but some children suffer from a less common and more alarming sleep disorder.  It is called a night terror.  After sleeping for a period of time, children with this condition suddenly begin to scream incoherently, thrash around, breathe rapidly, have an increased heart rate, and perspire.  They are inconsolable.  It does not involve dreaming and the child does not appear to be awake, but rather she is in a sort of trance-like state.  They are disoriented, don’t recognize their parents, and are confused.  To an observer, they seem to be terrified.  After a few minutes, they calm down and fall back to sleep.  They don’t remember the episode.
