  3. Estrogen helps nighttime hot flashes, not sleep

    Reuters
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who wake up at least three times during the night from bothersome hot flashes wake up less when they take estrogen, but the quality of their sleep remains the same, according to a new study. "There may be a benefit for...

  7. Ladies, it's never too late to benefit from a little talk therapy

By midlife, you've probably spent years thinking of yourself as a certain kind of person — outgoing or introverted, high-strung or easygoing, optimistic or pessimistic. You may have become accustomed to certain roles and styles of communication in your relationships and certain ways of coping with stress. Even if you're dissatisfied with those roles and your patterns of coping aren't working so well anymore, you may think it's too late or too bothersome to question your perceptions or seek changes in important relationships.

  9. Menopause the Musical

“Menopause” is the hilarious musical sendup that puts some noise in “the silent passage.” The story has four women with seemingly nothing in common meeting in a tussle over a sale-rack bra at Bloomingdale’s. Turns out the gals have plenty in common — hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, looney libidos and all the rest. The story unfolds through musical parodies of baby boomer classics: “Chain of Fools” becomes “Change of Life” and “My Guy” becomes “My Thighs.” It’s a party zone for the 40-and-better crowd. The stars include Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle in “Beauty and the Beast.”

Every woman will experience menopause, some in the normal course of aging and some before. It can bring on a host of symptoms in addition to hot flashes. But there are things that women can do, from improving their diet and exercising to finding the right treatment, explains Dr. Rakhi Gupta, a gynecologist at the Center for Women's Health at Good Samaritan Hospital. She answers some common questions about this life change.

  13. For the forgetful in menopause, brain works harder to keep up

Around the time of menopause, many women complain of mental slippage. But, as if to inflict some perverse trick upon them, cognitive scientists have found that they actually perform no more poorly than women who do not have such complaints. (Reassuring in a way: You're not losing your memory, but you may be losing your mind.)
