    Spinal manipulation existed thousands of years ago, but it wasn&rsquo;t until the 1890s the term chiropractic was adopted by practitioners of this technique. The term is rooted in the Greek words &ldquo;praxis&rdquo; and &ldquo;cheir&rdquo;, aka &ldquo;hand&rdquo; and &ldquo;active&rdquo; &ndash; terms that apply as much today as they did when the practice was first systematized by BJ Palmer in Iowa. He opened a school in the late 1890s and since then chiropractic techniques have been applied, studied and broadened to the point that medical insurance companies cover the cost of treatments.
