  1. Program with tiny budget makes huge difference for pets, owners

The teenager showed up in a panic on Thursday, cradling a wounded puppy in arms spattered with blood. A stray dog had attacked his 2-month-old pit bull on a walk near their South Los Angeles home. The city animal shelter nearby was the only place he knew to go.

  3. Poor baby fox was doomed from birth

I am in total agreement with Kim R. Filer ("Authorities too quick to kill rescued baby fox" May 7). This poor baby fox was doomed from birth. First by an accident that put him in harm's way and then by "authorities" who had to show their big nasty hand of power to kill. How sad for those who have so little care and empathy for creatures who are at mercy of men who couldn't even take a week to see if the fox was a rabies carrier before snuffing out his little life.

As water rose in downtown Naperville along the Riverwalk, a good Samaritan noticed an unusual visitor hanging around a flooded parking lot.

  9. Health agency was correct to euthanize baby fox

A recent letter to the editor criticizes health officials for euthanizing that "dear baby fox" which was rescued by some misguided firemen ("Authorities too quick to kill rescued baby fox," May 7). Actually, the blame for that animal's death lies with the...

  15. Authorities too quick to kill fox

I was absolutely appalled at reading that the dear baby fox who was rescued by concerned firefighters was euthanized for fear of rabies ("Rescued fox pup put down for fear of rabies," May 5). This baby fox was given a second chance at life when it was rescued and was even newsworthy enough to appear on local TV stations. When the public saw this, I know in my heart that all they could feel was happiness for this dear creature.

  19. Health agency mishandled baby fox

I initially loved The Sun's story about the baby fox rescue, although it's ironic the firefighters were the ones who ended up helping, being unable to get hold of people and agencies who are supposed to be there.
