    For two decades starting in the 1930s, the respected Journal of the American Medical Assn. (JAMA) ran advertisements for cigarettes.     If the high price of cigarettes isn't going to stop people from smoking, the gory pictures on the back of the pack won't. A pack of butts now is around $8 in Connecticut. I smoked two packs a day when I was smoking cigarettes, so that would be $16 a day, $112 a week, $5,824 a year. My God! I haven't totaled the annual cost of my hypothetical smoking in ages. Today, it would cost almost six grand annually to feed my habit. It'd be cheaper to smoke pot!
