5. Howard moves to stem erosion, pollution in Ellicott City waterway

When it rains, not only does storm water flow downstream, but so do the banks of small streams emptying into Red Hill Branch, bringing other pollutants with the eroding soil. In a move to stem environmental problems and add wildlife habitat, Howard County has begun four restoration projects for the waterway in Ellicott City.

  9. New for 2012: Cleaner air

Whether casting a line in a Maryland stream or a lake in the most remote reaches of this country, a fisherman would be hard-pressed to catch a fish that does not contain mercury. Indeed, most recent studies suggest that it might be impossible.

  11. Chesapeake Bay: Cleanup takes effort

There's a popular saying in the halls of the State House in Annapolis: "Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die." It's used most often to describe government's classic conundrum — as laudable as a goal might be, people would rather not sacrifice to attain it.

  13. Green movement's blues

As we head into the new year, America's environmental movement is stalled. The topic of climate change is anathema to the Republican presidential candidates, and the incumbent is tepid on the subject at best. The U.S. stands alone among industrialized nations, who all seem to be making progress in switching to alternative energy sources and reducing their carbon emissions. Germany is on track to obtain 80 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050; Denmark plans for 100 percent by the same date. China, it has been much reported, now leads the world in wind turbine production. The U.S., meanwhile, continues to give generous tax breaks to coal and oil companies. Despite the rancorous debate in Washington to reduce federal spending, those tax breaks merit hardly a mention at all.
