1. Our so-called leaders

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Post reports that the odds are increasing -- perhaps to the point of near certainty -- that the so-called "sequester" will take effect March 1. This would be a pity. For non-budget wonks, the sequester mandates about $1 trillion in government spending cuts over nine years, divided between defense and non-defense programs. These would be the wrong cuts, done in the wrong way. There's a better approach.

  3. Wanted: More Chesapeake Bay access

You're never far from water in Maryland, with the Chesapeake Bay nearly bisecting the state. Yet for all that, there's a surprising shortage of places where people can launch a boat, cast a fishing line or wade in.

  9. Taking her daughters to remote Australia to sleep on the ground

NORTHERN TERRITORY, Australia — It was a terrible thing to admit to myself, but my teenage daughters are a bit spoiled. My own youth involved riding public transportation, taking bug-infested hikes, sailing competitively in thunderstorms and sleeping on the ground. My children, I realized, would be adrift if asked to do any of these things.
