1. Connecticut's Oscar Favorites From Those In The Know

The Academy Awards bring out the critic in everyone. It starts when the nominations are announced — "Whaddya mean, Ben Affleck wasn't nominated?" — and lasts long after Oscar night. That annual ritual takes place Sunday night and will be televised starting at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. (That's the actual ceremony; the red carpet fashion show starts at 7 p.m.) To give a little inside perspective to the glitzy festivities, we thought we'd ask a few Connecticut residents — people whose lives revolve around the entertainment industry — producers, directors, cinema managers, actors, costumers — about the Oscars and the 2012 movie year in general. What impressed them? What trends did they notice? Who should win? Who will win? Let's let the experts riff ...

  3. The 'Argo' factor in this year's Oscar fest

In the week since Oscar nominations were announced, we've sat through two award shows — the Critics' Choice Awards, thrown by a group of junketeers who, according to Anne Hathaway at least, can't even spell the names of their winners right, and...

  5. Now for real insight into Oscars -- by the guilds

The academy liked "Argo," but not its director, Ben Affleck. The Directors Guild of America nominated Affleck, but couldn't find room for "Silver Linings Playbook" auteur David O. Russell, who, naturally, received an Oscar nomination for direction....

  7. Will "Lincoln" error spoil its Oscar shot?

Connecticut congressman Joe Courtney pointed out a historic blooper in the film “Lincoln” -- and some Hollywood experts wonder if the resultant fuss will mar the film’s shot at a best-picture Oscar. (Some even wonder if Joe Courtney is gunning for “Argo” because its star, Ben Affleck, had campaigned for him.) "Lincoln" had congressmen from Connecticut voting to uphold slavery when in fact all Connecticut's congressmen voted for the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. The film's writer, Tony Kushner, said that was a dramatic device to heighten suspense, and many historians say they're not concerned about the minor inaccuracy because the film captured the bigger point -- Lincoln’s drive to get the 13th Amendment passed. What's your view? Should (or will) the inaccuracy kill the film's chance to get a best picture award? Or will the judges give the filmmakers a break, given the stirring larger story the movie tells?

Correction: Although not constitutionally required to do so, President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment after its passage. The suggestion in this piece that he did not sign it is incorrect . With Oscar night a week away, America's newest indoor...

  11. In fact-based films, how much fiction is OK?

NEW YORK (AP) — The scene: Tehran's Mehrabad airport, January 1980. Six U.S. diplomats, disguised as a fake sci-fi film crew, are about to fly to freedom with their CIA escorts. But suddenly there's a moment of panic in what had been a smooth trip through the airport.

  13. Oscars and American history: True, or true enough?

A modest proposal: Movies exploring some aspect of American history, such as “Argo,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” should leave off the “based on a true story” or “inspired by true events” language and stick to what “Lincoln” screenwriter Tony Kushner advocates: a clear, simple and proud declaration of “historical fiction.”

0.5 stars (out of four) I kid you not: Someone in “Saving Lincoln” actually says, “Lincoln, I had been thinkin' ...,” and it's not meant to be funny. Of course, this is a historical drama in which all of the sets are green...

  19. In 'Lincoln,' a historical lapse

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" has been acclaimed not just by critics but by historians as well for its acute and realistic portrayal of the 16th president as he maneuvered to pass the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States. But the filmmakers got at least one detail wrong: They depicted two Connecticut delegates to the House of Representatives voting against the amendment when, in fact, all four of Connecticut's House members voted for it in 1865. Now, one of the state's current representatives, Joe Courtney, a Democrat, has written to Spielberg asking if the movie could be corrected before it's released on DVD.
