I've spent years studying, writing and teaching about the fight to end slavery, so I was excited when Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner brought that history to the screen in the Oscar-nominated &ldquo;Lincoln.&rdquo; But for all the glamour of a cinematic blockbuster, watching a film like &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; reminds me that the novel as a literary form has distinct advantages when it comes to deepening how Americans today understand our history.
