3. 'Odd Life of Timothy Green' a tale of a little green sprout ★★ 1/2

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" is odd indeed. It comes from writer-director Peter Hedges of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and other pictures, and in pleasing ways as well as some dubious ones, Hedges ranges all over the place in his expansion of a story credited to Ahmet Zappa, Frank's son.

  13. 'Bitter Buddha': Spotlight's a bit brighter on pair's return

The last time I spoke with comedian Eddie Pepitone was June, just prior to the world premiere of his movie <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-06-14/entertainment/ct-mov-0615-chicago-closeup-20120615_1_bitter-buddha-lincoln-lodge-comedian">"The Bitter Buddha" in Chicago, where it screened during the Just For Laughs festival. Nine months and several tour stops later, he and director Steven Feinartz (a Buffalo Grove native) return to town this weekend on a triumphant wave of social media fervor. Both will be at the Music Box Theatre on Friday, with Pepitone performing a set Saturday at the Lincoln Lodge.

  17. Taking stock of Chicago TV, film

It was a notable year for Chicago's film and TV industry, both for projects that came — and those that didn't. First, the good news. The city was home to four television series in 2012. That is an unprecedented number.

  19. '10 Years' a reunion worth the trip ★★★

The largely engaging class-reunion dramedy "10 Years" allows audiences to pretend they went to high school with the likes of Channing Tatum, Justin Long, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie and Kate Mara. But at some point, they are also going to have to pretend the film, written and directed by Jamie Linden (the screenwriter of "Dear John" and the fine "We Are Marshall"), is deeper and more essential than it actually is; there's a lot of been-there, done-that going on.

  23. It came from Ray Bradbury

Though known primarily as an author, Ray Bradbury had a fixation with Hollywood. It was inevitable that his skills as a science fiction writer would eventually land him work in the movies.
