  15. All with a dash of drama

    Special to The Times
It was a balmy winter night, just a hint of wind, creating a near-perfect twinkling sky. Everything was at one inside the romantic enclave of Whitley Heights, a mere pillow's throw from Hollywood Boulevard and the adrenaline-injected 101 Freeway. For...

  17. 'Rollerball' (2002)

    Times Staff Writer
To watch the new "Rollerball" is to understand why John McTiernan would be tempted to rework the 1975 Norman Jewison original. The earlier film was set in a future in which an ultra-violent sport served as an outlet for a world in which other violence had...

  19. X-Men

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday July 14, 2000      To be a teenager is to feel different, misunderstood, perhaps even a bit of a mutant. It was the gift of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the creators of the Marvel comic decades ago, to realize with "X-Men" that conflicted...

"X2" is 2 good 2 be 4-gotten. Brisk and involving with a streamlined forward propulsion, it's the kind of superhero movie we want if we have to have superhero movies at all.

"X2" is 2 good 2 be 4-gotten. Brisk and involving with a streamlined forward propulsion, it's the kind of superhero movie we want if we have to have superhero movies at all. "X2: X-Men United" is also an improvement over the initial "X-Men" venture, yet,...

  23. 'Femme Fatale'

A reverie about beautiful women and the seductiveness of the movies, Brian De Palma's exuberant, blissfully entertaining new thriller "Femme Fatale" stars Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as a thief who steals $10 million in jewels before taking off with another woman's identity. Set in Cannes and Paris, the film has the high-buffed gloss and high-octane jolts you expect of De Palma, but what makes it transporting is that it's also one of the smartest, most pleasurable expressions of pure movie love to come from an American director in years. It's the 24th feature De Palma has directed -- as well as the first of his films he's written in a decade -- but it feels and plays like the work of an artist newly born.
