  1. Scientists Want Us to Change Our Sleep Patterns

We all know about the health benefits of getting eight hours sleep, but it turns out that scientists disagree on how we should get those eight hours. A <a href=&quot;http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/opinion/sunday/rethinking-sleep.html?_r=2src=me&amp;ref=general&amp;" target="_blank">new article in the NY Times</a> argues that less nighttime sleeping and more napping is more effective and better for our mental health.

  7. 'Self-Medicated'

    Special to The Times
"Self-Medicated" must have been cathartic for writer-director-producer-star Monty Lapica to make, but its therapeutic value for audiences is questionable. Reportedly based on Lapica's experience as a privileged but delinquent teen committed to a rehab...

  11. Prefontaine

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday January 24, 1997      Steve Prefontaine was, to crib a line from Bruce Springsteen, born to run. And to win. The ultimate competitive animal, he finished first in more than 75% of his races and remains the only person ever to hold the U.S. records...

  13. SwitchBack

    FOR THE TIMES
Friday October 31, 1997      Before he exploded onto the scene of commercial screenwriting with his back-to-back scripts for "Die Hard" and "The Fugitive," young Jeb Stuart wrote a screenplay in a college workshop program that showed enough promise to...

  15. Seven

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday September 22, 1995      Noticeable skill has gone into the making of "Seven," but it's hard to take much pleasure in that. The story of two cops on the trail of a terrifying serial killer, "Seven" is most notable for how lovingly it lingers on the...

  17. Dead Man Walking

    TIMES FILM CRITIC
Friday December 29, 1995      It is happenstance as much as anything else that gets Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon) to death row. On impulse she answers a letter from an inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola and now she's in the...

  19. Saving Silverman

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday February 9, 2001      "Saving Silverman" is a standard-issue numskull comedy that aims low but is high in energy. The humor may be less than inspired, to put it kindly, but the shenanigans are nonstop.      In any event, director Dennis Dugan has...

  21. 'Willard' (2003)

    Times Staff Writer
What's most intriguing about New Line Cinema's "Willard," a hard-edged remake of the 1971 release of the same name is how the movies have changed over the past three decades. Of the original film, directed by the late Daniel Mann, it was possible to...

  23. 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning'

&quot;Meat's meat and bone is bone," proclaims Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) as he prepares a particularly gory repast. The makers of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" take a similarly elemental approach to the revived franchise's latest installment. There's hardly a body part that isn't mangled or lopped off, ground up or sliced through. Although it's billed as a prequel to the 2003 remake, "Beginning" owes much to the brutal brilliance of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original (pointedly unmentioned in the new movie's press kit). This is not a slick, jokey horror movie in the post-"Scream" mold, but a genuine attempt to strip the coating from the audience's nerves. It's nasty and brutish, if not particularly short.
