1. Scientists Want Us to Change Our Sleep Patterns

We all know about the health benefits of getting eight hours sleep, but it turns out that scientists disagree on how we should get those eight hours. A <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/opinion/sunday/rethinking-sleep.html?_r=2src=me&ref=general&" target="_blank">new article in the NY Times argues that less nighttime sleeping and more napping is more effective and better for our mental health.

  13. Movie review: Toy Story, Toy Story 2 3D double feature -- 5 out of 5 stars

Converting Pixar's history-changing cartoons Toy Story and Toy Story 2 into 3D and pairing them, in theaters, for a double feature reminds us how very good these movies were and remain, how great the computer animation and how witty and sentimental the scripts.

  17. 'Self-Medicated'

    Special to The Times

  21. 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: TheBeginning'

"Meat's meat and bone is bone," proclaims Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) as he prepares a particularly gory repast. The makers of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" take a similarly elemental approach to the revived franchise's latest installment. There's hardly a body part that isn't mangled or lopped off, ground up or sliced through. Although it's billed as a prequel to the 2003 remake, "Beginning" owes much to the brutal brilliance of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original (pointedly unmentioned in the new movie's press kit). This is not a slick, jokey horror movie in the post-"Scream" mold, but a genuine attempt to strip the coating from the audience's nerves. It's nasty and brutish, if not particularly short.
