7. 2013 Summer Pop Music Events

The Hartford Courant
It's the summer tour season, when there are multiple live music concerts worth seeing every week, sometimes on the same day. Money, as well as the fact that matter cannot occupy two spaces at the same time, may prevent fans from seeing every act they'd...

9. Furthur Plays a 9-Show Run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester

We mentioned last week that Furthur was coming to town. And this week, they're still here. Bob Weir and Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead play the hits (and the obscurities) from their catalog again at the Captiol Theatre this Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday as part of their nine-show run. The Dead played there 18 times in a one-year span in the early '70s, so they'll feel right at home. Sold out shows have a tendency to have extra tickets released as the show dates get closer, so keep an eye on the theater's site.

11. Our Picks: This Week at the Capitol Theatre

This week's lineup at the Capitol Theatre is going to make you want to book a hotel room in Port Chester and call in sick to work for a while, the only exceptions oddly being Saturday and Sunday night when there are no shows scheduled. Thursday kicks it off with blues legend B.B. King, who is now 87 years old, a living legend if ever there was one. If you haven't seen him play still, here's your big chance. With Friday comes John Prine (pictured), one of the most influential and captivating songwriters to emerge in the '70s, which is saying a lot. And then, on Monday, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead bring Furthur to town for a nine show residency. That's nine opportunities to get your noodle dance on.

13. New Riders of the Purple Sage Perform at FTC's StageOne in Fairfield on March 16

The New Riders of the Purple Sage got their start when songwriter John Dawson and fledgling pedal steel player Jerry Garcia teamed up to play some country music in coffee shops. Later that year lead guitarist John Nelson joined them, and before too long they had a full band supplemented by other Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart. While on the Festival Express tour across Canada, alongside acts like Janis Joplin, the Band and the Flying Burrito Brothers (and the Dead), they recruited pedal steel player Buddy Cage from the group Ian and Sylvia to replace an increasingly-busy Garcia. Dawson passed away in 2009, but Nelson and Cage are still at it today with a new set of bandmates. They'll be at Fairfield Theatre Company's StageOne Saturday night to play cowboy tunes like "Panama Red" that hearken back to the days of American Beauty-era psychedelic country music.

21. Phil Lesh & Friends Play The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester This Weekend

It's been a long time since we've written about anything happening in Westchester County, but the newly reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester cannot be ignored. In its heyday it hosted the likes of Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Derek and the Dominos, Jimmy Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Bob Dylan played the grand re-opening in September. This week, Phil Lesh & Friends will hole up for a four-day run that will hopefully reignite the energy stored up in the theatre's 86-year-old, but newly-renovated walls. We will be including the venue's upcoming events in our music listings from now on. (Also, it's located just a block off the Port Chester Metro North stop, so you can drink all you want.)
