7. On Kim Gordon's upcoming book about Sonic Youth, 'Girl in a Band'

Sonic Youth came into being more than 30 years ago, when Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore started playing together in New York City. With bandmates Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley, they released dissonant, loud, arty records that changed the sound of rock music at the end of the 20th century. And now Gordon is writing a memoir about it.

  11. Sonic Youth is on hiatus, but Kim Gordon isn't

Kim Gordon doesn't come right out and say that Sonic Youth, the exalted alt-rock band she fronted for 30 years, is history. But ask her if it's fair to consider her new band to be a "post-Sonic Youth" project, and she'll agree — very quickly, and in a way that seems to rule out further discussion.

  13. Damon & Naomi Perform at Willimantic Records on March 23

Galaxie 500 released three records before promptly disbanding in 1991, leaving behind a compact, respectable legacy that has earned praise from Liz Phair and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Much like their revered forebears in the Velvet Underground, it's been said Galaxie 500 broke up before they could suck. Singer/guitarist Dean Wareham went on to do his own thing, but drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang (pictured) soldiered on as a duo, releasing five albums as Damon & Naomi and re-pressing their old band's records (they bought the Galaxie 500 masters at auction when the original record label went under). They'll perform at Willimantic Records on Saturday with one-time Danbury resident Elisa Flynn opening. Admission is free; donations are encouraged.

  19. Bookshelves don't lie

Until recently I owned just two books that were composed of little else but pictures of people's bookshelves. Not nearly enough. One book I received last year for Christmas, a compendium of pictures of author's bookshelves, a sort of literary rubbernecking. The other book I received many Christmases ago, a coffee-table book of pictures of people reclining at home surrounded by their mammoth collections of books. The latter contains a picture I have never forgotten: Keith Richards in a chair in the center of a large home library, probably in a mansion in the British countryside, strumming a guitar and surrounded (you realize the closer you stare into the picture) by shelf after shelf of war histories, biographies of generals and tactical manuals.

  23. Connecticut Filmmaker Brendan Toller Kickstarts a Documentary About Rock Insider Danny Fields

<span style="font-size: small;">Growing up in Cheshire, Brendan Toller may have had the hippest mom and dad in town. Both rock 'n' roll fans and record collectors, the elder Tollers raised their boy right and after he’d graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., he returned the favor — or they got a return on their hipster investment — when he made the documentary film I Need That Record! (2010), an energetic musing on vinyl junkies featuring such victims as Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Ian MacKaye and (yes!) Noam Chomsky.
