It’s safe to say Lollapalooza didn’t have people like me in mind when choosing its headliners.
It’s safe to say Lollapalooza didn’t have people like me in mind when choosing its headliners. There is no hip-hop headliner like there was in 2008 (Kanye West) and 2011 (Eminem). Also, I’m too young to care that the three-day music...

13. The Writer's Room aims for quiet style amid Hollywood bar scene

There are precious few bars in Los Angeles that are welcoming, upscale and have a legitimate claim on pre-1950s Hollywood drinking history. This weekend sees the return of a great one, the Writer's Room, a space that once belonged to the famed Musso & Frank Grill. In its early days it was referred to as the "back room," where writers such as Raymond Chandler and F. Scott Fitzgerald were rumored to toss back gimlets.

17. Mysterious Forces: The Wood Brothers play Ridgefield Playhouse on May 18

<span style="font-size: medium;">A Wood Brothers show can veer off into a number of different, closely related musical territories. It’s one part intimate, singer-songwriter showcase, with Oliver Wood’s well-crafted compositions and whiskey-honed voice front and center and rich harmonies all over the place. It’s another part jam-band rock, with stinging solo bursts from Oliver’s guitar, and especially with the contributions of bassist Chris Wood, who made his name in the music business with groove-jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood. And it’s a third part straight-up, chug-along blues-rock, with Oliver’s distorted slide guitar slicing through the mix. The whole package cuts along the grains of several complementary traditions of American roots music — blues, soul, gospel, folk. It depends what you’re listening for.
