3. Bowie Back After Ten Years

<span style="font-size: small;">David Bowie has exploded out of a decade of obscurity and launched a video for new single Where Are We Now? taken from upcoming album The Next Day. He marked his 66th birthday with a website revamp alongside the surprise news of the studio record’s release, set for March. A press release explains: “January 8 is a timely moment for such a treasure to appear as if out of nowhere. “In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumour and wishful thinking. A new record – who would have ever thought it, who’d have ever dreamed it! After all, David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants; when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. “Today he definitely has something to say.” Where Are We Now? was produced by Tony Visconti and looks back on Bowie’s time in Berlin. It’s one of 14 tracks which will appear on the standard version of The Next Day, with three additional songs to appear on the deluxe version. See the video here.

15. Tattoo resurgence as permanent as the ink?

Change of Subject
Steve Chapman's riff today on tattoos -- They're ugly, a form of self-mutilation masquerading as self-expression. As a way of showing your edgy, noncomformist personality, getting inked always seemed to me about as sensible as lopping off an ear. --...

23. The evolving images of 9/11

The first screening of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" came just weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11. The movie had been in the works for years, the first in a trilogy based on novels that had been written decades earlier, of course, by an Englishman named J.R.R. Tolkien during Hitler's rise to power and World War II. And yet the first minute of the film delivered a queasy jolt of immediacy, a chill of recognition. It opened with no image, and very faint background music, little but a black screen and Cate Blanchett's mournful voice, reciting what sounded like, that autumn day, either a prayer or the most poetic 9/11 editorial no one had written yet:
