1. Cheap Time's Half-Sugary, Half-Sour Garage Pop Arrives at Cafe Nine on Sept. 30

<span style="font-size: medium;">In 1989, a four-ish-year-old Jeffrey Novak scored the Ghostbusters II soundtrack — his first record purchase. The album, which featured contributions from Bobby Brown, Run-D.M.C. and Elton John, did not change his life — at least not in the way music types mean when they say such a thing. It was no loss, really, as he had a long line of subsequent favorites to do the heavy lifting. In elementary school, the Henderson, Tenn.-raised Novak visited antique and thrift stores with his parents, procuring work from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Doors. Around this period, he also enjoyed the fruits of mid-1990s (namely, Green Day's Dookie and the Smashing Pumpkins in their prime). In junior high, contemporary rock fell out of favor with him, but when he entered high school circa 2001 — right as the White Stripes and the Strokes pumped fresh blood into garage and indie rock — he was right back in the thick of things, now intent on firing up a band of his own. At the time, he also began absorbing punk acts like the Sex Pistols and Ramones, and proto-punk outfits such as the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. “Once I heard proto-punk bands, I understood these weird bands that really didn't fit in their time. That still speaks to me,” the fast-talking Novak, now 27, says. “I'm always trying to find out about records that exist from the late '60s into the mid-to-late '70s. I think that's the most interesting era for music and the way records sound.”

On September 10th, James Cameron’s epic Titanic will be released for the first time ever on Blu-ray 2D and 3D. I thought I would commemorate 4-disc set with a 3-part blog on my experiences with the Titanic. I am embarrassed to admit I bought a DVD...

  5. Counter Intelligence: Lazy Ox Canteen in Little Tokyo

Andoni Luis Aduriz, the chef of Mugaritz, in the countryside outside San Sebastian, Spain, may be the closest thing to a pure artist in the restaurant world today. He encases potatoes in thin coats of ceramic so his customers can experience the sensation of biting into a stone. He drives dark-chocolate nails into scoops of sorbet. He smears fish eggs on sheets of edible plastic or curls of edible construction paper. He even has a manifesto: "You don't have to like something to like it."

  9. Opening ceremony emphasizes whimsy over solemnity

LONDON — In a city that knows how to do ceremony — from hoary rituals formalized in the Middle Ages to celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee last month partly through the Twitter feed @BritishMonarchy — an atmosphere of whimsy and party won out over pomp and circumstance during an Olympic opening ceremony that allowed an economically beleaguered Britain to pat itself on the back.

  13. Song of the Summer: FIDLAR's "No Waves"

Every year Entertainment Weekly tips its readers to what they consider “The Best Summer Songs” of the year. I grew up in the 1970s, the silver age of AM Top 40 radio, and understand what a summer song is: “Beach Baby” by First Class or Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night would be prime examples of songs which defined their respective summers (of 1974 and 1983). Summer songs generally aren’t by big name acts; big summer hits by known artists fall into canons. In summer songs, the season is the star.

  19. Madonna's 'W.E.' all dressed up, going nowhere -- ✭ 1/2

They split in 2008, but apparently Madonna stayed married to director Guy Ritchie just long enough to absorb his most grating cinematic instincts — shooting in every style, in an addled, shuffle-mode, falsely glamorizing way until all is chaos. And, astonishingly, boredom.

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Bruce Springsteen got a few laughs Thursday as he kicked off his South by Southwest Music Conference keynote by enumerating nearly every musical genre under the Texas sun, from jangle-pop and hip-hop to death metal and low-fi. "Just add 'neo' or 'post' " to every name on that list, he said, and you'd have hundreds more.
