  1. Tortuga Music Festival 2014: Who do you want to see?

At this point last week, the Tortuga Music Festival on Fort Lauderdale beach was still just a dream. Its success, based on location and a sterling lineup, seemed like such a natural, but who could be sure how it would fly? By the end of the remarkable weekend, the word-of-mouth among locals and out-of-towners was unanimous: We gotta do this again.

  3. Les Claypool of Primus and Dean Ween go fishing and drinking in Fort Lauderdale

If the guy in the rakish spectacles at the next table at Mezzaluna Wednesday night bore an uncanny resemblance to Les Claypool, it’s because that indeed was the Primus bass player and bon vivant tucking into the Italian supper specialties off the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale.

  9. Primus at the Fillmore: "Grinnin' like bastards"

The crowd at a Primus concert is, for the most part, predictable: A sea of black T-shirts and hoodies washes over the chosen venue, this time the Fillmore Miami Beach, with whiskey or beer in hand and often neon-colored tresses.

  11. Les Claypool's strange frequencies

If you've seen Les Claypool wearing a lobster suit in Primus' 2011 music video for the song "Tragedy's A'Comin'," you know the frontman is a genius of weird, and a goofball. But if you're a die-hard fan of the funk-metal trio, you've known that since the early '90s.

  21. Primus Heads to Bridgeport on July 21 to Lead the Vibes Brigade

<span style=&quot;font-size: medium;">One of the greatest moments in bassist Les Claypool&rsquo;s career came only a few months ago, at a fundraiser for Barack Obama. &ldquo; It was me, Booker T. Jones and Charlie Musselwhite,&rdquo; Claypool told me over the phone. &ldquo;I played &lsquo;Green Onions&rsquo; with Booker T. while the President was jogging into the room.&rdquo; The 50-year-old song was one he&rsquo;d performed with cover bands at biker bars, close to where he grew up in El Sobrante, Calif. &ldquo; And now I&rsquo;m playing it as the President is walking into a room.&rdquo; As Obama was leaving, the trio kicked off &ldquo;Time is Tight,&rdquo; another MGs classic. &ldquo; And there&rsquo;s Al Green air-bassing and making a goofy face right in front of me. It was fucking surreal.&rdquo;</span>

  23. Gathering of the Vibes 2012: A Recap

For Gathering of the Vibes 2012, I chose to decline all the media hook-ups and luxuries. No laptop. No power outlets. No VIP tent with couches. No pass for entry into the photo pit in front of the stage. No isolated, backstage, extra-clean Port-O-Pottys. I was fully embedded, camping in mud along with every other non-media-affiliated camper. It&rsquo;s only fair.
