**1/2 stars (out of four) We all assumed, upon discovering Ra Ra Riot, that they were a synth pop band, right? Or at least some kind of thing you could play at parties? It turned out they were actually a band with a string section, maybe best suited...

  5. The Go Guide Weekend Preview: Face to face with MMA legend Randy Couture

Randy Couture is a mixed-martial arts icon and UFC Hall of Famer who has brawled his way to five world titles and is a big reason that UFC is the pop-culture phenomenon it is today. But if there’s one thing he wants you to take away from his appearance in Boca Raton on Sunday, it is that MMA is a lot more than punching a guy in the face.

  9. Passion Pit postpones, but show goes on for Norfolk's own Kishi Bashi

It's a good news/bad news situation. Passion Pit has postponed its show Friday, July 20 at <a href="http://www.thenorva.com/schedule.php" target="_blank">The NorVa. That's bad. The upside is that Norfolk resident and rising indie star Kishi Bashi -- who was slated to open the show -- will play anyway.

  17. Neutral Milk Hotel is back at last -- but for how long?

When last seen on stage in Chicago playing a full set, in 1998 at the late, great Lincoln Avenue club Lounge Ax, Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum strummed his guitar so hard it appeared the strings and wood would shatter. He sang vivid stream-of-consciousness lyrics about surreal gardens, Anne Frank and God with eyes closed, as if reliving a religious experience. There was a ramshackle band behind him, and a rapt audience in front of him, but Mangum was so wrapped up in the music that he might as well have been the only person in the room.
