5. Dave Grohl mingles past, present with Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl saw the news online: The famously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church planned a protest outside a Foo Fighters concert in Kansas City, Mo. The band was another target of the tiny church, which has heckled the funerals of fallen U.S. soldiers, other churches and at least one appliance store. Grohl knew exactly what to do.

  17. A new beginning for the Chili Peppers

The first day of rehearsals was another momentous occasion for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was fall 2009, more than three years since the band last toured, and the rockers were beginning the hard work of rebirth with a new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer. Singer Anthony Kiedis was already en route when he got a disheartening text: Brendan Mullen, local rock club impresario and author, had died of a stroke while celebrating his 60th birthday.

  23. Jason Segel and Disney host a 'Muppets' reunion -- 3 stars

A frisky new film showcasing some old pals made out of felt, charm and some kind of genius, the Disney release "The Muppets" overcomes a jaded streak reflecting its makers' nervousness about selling Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the gang to an audience unfamiliar with "Sesame Street" (a Muppets chapter conspicuously left out of Disney's production notes) or "The Muppet Show" or the best of the earlier feature-length films, "The Great Muppet Caper" being my favorite. Hence, "The Muppets" deploys a bit of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a string of '80s jokes about Molly Ringwald and "Benson."
