11. CD of the Week: Wooden Wand, 'Briarwood (Deluxe Edition)'

There's a lot of asphalt, tire rubber, booze, motel stationery, pills, flames, crumpled cash, devils, self-destruction, bad love, dreams, angels, Jesus, deceit, and redemption in the music of James Jackson Toth, who performs under the name of Wooden Wand. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Toth is a poetic songwriter on par with Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. He's that deep, that good, and he has the combustible outlaw swagger of the Stones and David Allan Coe. This deluxe edition includes bare-bones acoustic demos (and the fleshed-out rocking studio versions) of all the tunes on Briarwood. The demos are as good as the final renditions — maybe better. For a taste of Wooden Wand's death-addled sulphuric style, listen to "The DNR Waltz," which includes lines like "when your body builds up an immunity to sunlight and smelling salts/then the only appropriate number is the do-not-resuscitate waltz."

23. Album review: Leonard Cohen, 'Old Ideas'

3.5 stars (out of 4)
3.5 stars (out of 4) It doesn’t seem possible, but Leonard Cohen’s voice sounds even deeper, darker, more foreboding than ever on his 12th studio album in 44 years, “Old Ideas” (Columbia). Cohen is 77, and he doesn’t...
