3. Rain delays Pitchfork opening; Outer Minds, Lower Dens kick off fest

Even as gray skies, muggy atmosphere and rain made for a bleak opening Friday to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park, the crowd waiting to enter the event was thousands deep along Ashland Avenue. Inside, puddles formed on the field and crews urgently mopped the stages. The music would have to wait, the first opening-day delay in the festival’s seven-year history.

  7. Drummers get their fill

It is said that a band is only as good as its drummer. Not only do drummers serve as the anchor that keeps the rest of the players in time, they also provide the essential foundation upon which most songs are built.

  9. Review: Moving right along with the Black Keys at Staples Center

The Black Keys spent the beginning of last week in New York City, where they played for more than 60,000 people at a massive outdoor concert in Central Park with Neil Young and Foo Fighters. Saturday evening, they ended the week at L.A.’s Staples Center, rounding out a two-night stand sandwiched between similar engagements by Justin Bieber and Madonna.

  11. 'Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day' Showing at Selected Theaters Statewide

Tickets to Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion concert at London's O2 Arena were some of the most sought-after in history. This Wednesday, Zep fans will get to feel as though they were there, soaking in the glory of the graying Zepsters — singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page (pictured), bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, sitting in for his late father, John — when the show airs on 1,500 screens worldwide. The remaining members and Bonham came together to pay tribute to late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, with whom they shared a friendly relationship. More than 20 million people entered a lottery to score one of the 18,000 available tickets. No tour followed this show — Plant was allegedly more interested in feeling out the territory he explored on Raising Sand, his Grammy-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss, than reliving past glories — but who knows what the future holds.

  13. Miles Mosley headlines with the Glendale Pops Orchestra at the Alex Theatre

Glendale Pops subscribers probably don’t know the name or music of 30-year-old Miles Mosley, a bassist and composer who headlines Saturday with the Glendale Pops Orchestra at the Alex Theatre. The pairing is a departure for a series more likely to feature artists with identifiable histories that make for a pleasant date night.

  17. Kimbra brings 'Vows' to the Fonda Theatre

An experienced presence in her native New Zealand, Kimbra bent American ears -- and quite a few of them -- earlier this year as the female voice on Gotye's Hot 100-topping "Somebody That I Used to Know." But that acoustic quirk-pop hit only hints at a bit of what Kimbra does on "Vows," her appealingly scattershot solo debut. It flits from jazzy electro-pop to muscular art rock to one tune that sounds like it was written for TLC's "CrazySexyCool." Pop & Hiss caught up with the 22-year-old singer-songwriter at a Studio City cafe ahead of her shows Wednesday and Thursday at the Fonda Theatre.

  23. Rock of pages

You love at least one album. It is a perfect album that makes your toe tap and your heart sing (your head, too). How can something sound so right from beginning to end? So made just for you? In that melding of melody and verve is an album you feel, literally, be it by Bob Dylan, Adele or Metallica. Your relationship with Fill-in-the-Blank album — be it by Bob Dylan, Adele or Metallica — is also unique. It is your relationship, unlike any other, and so is the story behind it: the time in your life you found it, the discovery that it soundtracked, the reasons it still pulls you along today. You might also think that this is a story that needs to be told — because no one has felt this ever, no one understands the genius like you do! — and this, most likely, is what has led 33 1/3 to thrive.
