15. Jim James of My Morning Jacket to release solo album

Ward and Mike Mogis as <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2009/sep/20/entertainment/ca-monsters-folk20" target="_blank">Monsters of Folk, and earlier this year he took part in an all-semi-star homage to Woody Guthrie called "New Multitudes." There's also "Tribute To," the 2009 EP of George Harrison covers he put out under the name Yim Yames.

  21. Lez Zeppelin Plays Up or On the Rocks in Hartford on Nov. 2

Listening to Lez Zeppelin is really, really enjoyable, and also jarring. Tribute bands aren't supposed to be this good. LZ pull all of it off: the musicianship (ironically, probably the easiest), the look and swagger (more difficult to be convincing) and the charisma and chemistry (nearly impossible). That said, the concept of an all-female Zeppelin tribute band isn't off-the-wall; everybody, Zeppelin included, was gender-bending in the early '70s. Lez Zep tosses some cheek into the stolid Zep-ness as well; the cover of Lez Zeppelin I, their excellent 2010 release, uses the iconic/phallic Hindenburg image in, shall we say, a provocative fashion. Their first, self-titled album, found them working with famed producer Eddie Kramer, who was personally behind the desk during the recording of five Led Zeppelin albums. (It's a producer's dream: what recording engineer wouldn't want to re-create, note-for-note and tone-for-tone, the most celebrated rock recordings of the last 50 years?) Following the release of I, you have to imagine they plan to cover the entire catalog, which means fans have many years of great music to look forward to. They'll be at Up or On the Rocks on Friday. (The kicker? They've got Harford roots.)

  23. Afghan Whigs revive combustible chemistry

For a guy who specialized in writing poisonous songs about disintegrating relationships while in the Afghan Whigs, Greg Dulli sounds positively upbeat about his reunion this year with his combative bandmates, namely Whigs bassist John Curley and guitarist Rick McCollum.
