1. Cohen-Buckley harmony highlighted in new book

My first Leonard Cohen experience was the soundtrack on Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers," where Cohen declared, among other things, "Everybody knows."

7. Meshell Ndegeocello talks Nina Simone ahead of Royce Hall date

Meshell Ndegeocello's place in pop culture has shrunk since her <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aoywIHLqbs" target="_blank">mid-'90s days on MTV. But her talent has only grown. In October the New York-based singer-bassist released the stunningly beautiful "Pour Une Âme Souveraine," a collection of songs written or popularized by Nina Simone featuring guest appearances by Sinead O'Connor, Cody Chesnutt, Lizz Wright and others. Pop & Hiss caught up with Ndegeocello ahead of her show Friday night at UCLA's Royce Hall.

11. Concert review: Leonard Cohen at Akoo Theatre

With a fedora shadowing his eyes and a sharp suit accenting some spry dance steps, the 78-year-old Leonard Cohen played many roles Friday before a full house at the Akoo Theatre in Rosemont: gentleman caller, graying patriarch, undertaker, assassin, penitent, screw-up, song and dance man.

Capitol Ideas with John L. Micek
Good Thursday Morning, Fellow Seekers. Our apologies for our absence yesterday. We burned a rare vacation day to tackle the increasingly Serengeti-like conditions of the front lawn at Casa de Capitol Ideas. While plowing through the high grass of our........

15. Q&A: Sharon Van Etten

Listening to Sharon Van Etten's music, you'd never guess she has a difficult time showing vulnerability.
Listening to Sharon Van Etten's music, you'd never guess she has a difficult time showing vulnerability. The Jersey-born singer-songwriter's albums are uniformly confessional, steeped in heartache, longing and regret. Listening to battered tunes like...

17. Album review: John Cale, 'Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood'

3 stars (out of 4)
3 stars (out of 4) “I’m trying to keep the noise down,” John Cale sings on his 15th studio album. Fat chance of that happening. “Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood” (Six Degrees) finds the Velvet Underground cofounder still in...

19. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

I remember kind of liking Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, but thought they tried too hard to be hip with all the music references. The writer of that screenplay – Lorene Scafaria – wrote this, making her directorial debut. This time one of the two protagonists loves collecting vinyl records, which is the go-to hobby for people that are hip. And like her, I’d be furious if my lover left me and took my Pet Sounds album. I’m just not sure why she carries around albums when we’re told early on that the world will end in three weeks. The newscast even informs us that the last rocket that went up to try and destroy the asteroid failed. So I hardly think that people running around town would be carrying around their album collections instead of a small ipad with all their songs.
