17. Daum: Invasion of the idiocrats

You may not have seen "Idiocracy," the 2006 sci-fi comedy set in an utterly dysfunctional nation 500 years in the future, but chances are you've heard it mentioned lately. References to the film seem to be everywhere, and not just in op-eds penned by cranky columnists (I mentioned it in a column last year about public spaces being sold as advertising space). The latest issue of the Economist has an article about the business-sabotaging effects of the battles in Washington, headlined "American Idiocracy."

  21. October 17 - October 23 in nightlife: J. Cole, Double Dagger, Jackson Browne

The third Baltimore Beer Week came to a close Sunday. Over 300 tastings, homebrewing competitions and lectures were squeezed into the event's 11 days, sending thousands of beer lovers to bars in the city and the county. How did this year's event compare to last year's? Heavy Seas' Hugh Sisson had <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/music/midnight-sun-blog/bs-ae-beer-week-preview-20110930,0,2870621.story" target="_self">said before the week started that one goal for 2011 was to spread out more events so that there would be more quality instead of just an abundance of stuff for fans to pick from. Were organizers successful? Are you happy bars will now "go back to being a beer bar, instead of a packed bingo parlor," as Baltimore Liquor Board chairman Stephan Fogleman has tweeted? This week, will be far more low-key. The major music story won't be happening in town, but in New York, where the CMJ Music Marathon will get underway Tuesday. In town: there are concerts by Jackson Browne, Double Dagger, and Ami Dang.
