1. Fourth of July Celebrations in Connecticut

Independence Day is a holiday that seems to have taken a life of its own, far apart from its origins. Yes, deep down it all traces back to the fateful day when the Declaration of Independence, freshly printed and signed, effectively birthed one of history’s most powerful democracies. But how have we come to celebrate this historic event? Fireworks. Festivals. Hot dogs. That one Rolland-Emmerich movie.

  5. An epic performance of Carmina Burana at the Bushnell in Hartford

The highlight of this musical weekend just happens to put together the biggest assemblage of vocal and instrumental forces we've seen assembled in some time — the combined voices of the Hartford Chorale, Connecticut Children's Chorus, soprano Amanda Hall, tenor Joshua Kohl, baritone David Pershall, and Carolyn Kuan (pictured) leading the entire Hartford Symphony Orchestra — for an epic performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. If you go, you'll also hear HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal performing Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, a work that the composer likened to a symphony for solo violin and orchestra.

  13. Hartford Symphony Orchestra performs a tribute to "Cannonball" Adderley on March 2nd

Saxophonist and West Hartford native Erica von Kleist (pictured) and trumpet player Nadje Noordhuis join percussionist Gene Bozzi, bassist Rick Rozie, pianist/arranger Walter Gwardyak and the usual suspects from the HSO string section in this tribute to the great alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, an indispensible member of Miles Davis' first great quintet from the late '50s before leading his own bands. Along with Adderley arrangements, they'll make some room in the performance for some von Kleist originals.
