7. Hartford Symphony Jazzes Up Gershwin

It's been a good couple of years for the Gershwins. Composer George (who died in 1937 at the age of 38) and lyricist Ira (who outlived his brother by nearly half a century, dying age 86 in 1983) are currently represented by two very different Broadway musicals. The nuttily nostalgic Nice Work If You Can Get (which was initially developed at Connecticut's own Goodspeed Opera House in 2001) continues to play at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway (where it's slated to close June 15). The cutting-edge reimagining The Gershwin's Porgy & Bess — a shortened and reimagined version of the groundbreaking folk opera — had to extend its New York run into last fall, and will soon start a national tour.

  9. HSO Masterworks Series: "Rhapsody in Blue" Playing at The Bushnell This Weekend

The notorious Anderson and Roe Piano Duo (Elizabeth Joy Roe and Greg Anderson, pictured) join the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for a Gershwin-fest of sorts; Roe will tackle the Gersh's Rhapsody in Blue, while Anderson has his way with the "I Got Rhythm" Variations for Piano and Orchestra. For a piano duo, these two are pretty forward-thinking. (Their entertaining YouTube take on Astor Piazzolla's Libertango, for example, has been viewed over a million times.) The Gershwin Bros. would be proud.

  21. The Hartford Symphony Orchestra Performs Symphonie Fantastique, Jan. 10-13 at the Bushnell

France, Russia, the good ole U.S.A.: composers from all over the place struggled to write symphonies in Ludwig Van Beethoven's (1770-1827) formidable shadow. On Thursday, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, led by Carolyn Kuan (pictured), kick off 2013 with the performance of one overwhelmingly successful approach: Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, a programmatic five-movement work strung together by an idée fixe, a musical idea that runs through the work, shape-shifting along the way. Also on the bill are Samuel Barber's virtuosic, jazzy Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, performed by the HSO and guest violinist Alexander Kerr, and Russian composer Sergei Rachmoninoff's Vocalise, an unusual, wordless ditty from his Fourteen Songs of 1912.
