5. July 18-24 in Baltimore nightlife: Wiz Khalifa, Gang Gang Dance, Heavy Seas beer dinner

This week is a lot more low-key than last, but then again last week was pretty packed. It wasn't just because of Artscape. On Saturday alone, Cass McCombs gave a beautiful show at Golden West Cafe; Scottie B. killed at Metro Gallery, right after all the Artscape madness had ended; there was DYAO at Dionysus, and a tribute to Nina Hagen on the Charles St. bridge. Alas, there probably won't be anyone running around in "Blade Runner" costumes this week. What's happening: Wiz Khalifa and Gang Gang Dance are the best bets for the week; elsewhere there is Thank You, a beer dinner, and a couple of dance parties.

  11. A new age for New Age music

In late 2009, noise-pop group Animal Collective followed up its critics-poll-topping album "Merriweather Post Pavilion" with a stopgap EP, "Fall Be Kind." It generated buzz for featuring the first-ever licensed Grateful Dead sample, but what was more peculiar was a curlicue of pan flute woven into the song "Glaze" and credited to Gheorghe Zamfir. Zamfir, as the Romanian pan flute musician is best known, was a ubiquitous presence on television in the '80s, peddling wispy flute albums. For many people, it was one of the first sounds that came to be known by the label of New Age music.
