  5. Live review: The Bird & the Bee tackle Hall & Oates at the El Rey [Corrected]

    Pop & Hiss
The Bird and the Bee, a jazzy local synth-pop duo, has a fantastic single (with an unprintable title) imploring a hesitant beau to be a real boyfriend already. It’s a sassy chastening of noncommittal dudes. But when vocalist Inara George......

  7. Pipe Dreams

"The question you're always asked is, 'Is opera still relevant?' " says handsome young tenor on the rise Joseph Kaiser. Despite his amiable temperament, he seems peeved by the frequently posed query. And why not? Singers like Kaiser and star baritone...

  13. Making nice pays off for the Police

AS the traditional record business continues to unravel, musicians who are trying to keep lucrative careers alive don't seem to be worrying about whether the glass is half full or half empty. Instead, they're finding as many glasses as possible and putting a little something in each.

  15. Amanda Ross-Ho at Cherry and Martin

The title of <b>Amanda Ross-Ho</b>'s intriguing new exhibition at Cherry and Martin bemoans the frustrations of communication. &quot;Half of what I say is meaningless" is most recognizable as the first line of the Beatles' song "Julia," but it actually comes from a text by Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran, in which the second line reads, "But I say it so that the other half may reach you."

  21. Paradise lost

By Art Winslow We know from &quot; The 9/11 Commission Report" that 12 of the "muscle" hijackers that day (the non-pilots) came from Saudi Arabia and were 20 to 28 years old; most were unemployed, had little more than a high-school education and were unmarried. Five of the Saudis came from Asir province, in the south of the country bordering Yemen. Perhaps curiously to us, generally their ties to extremism had developed only in the two or three years preceding the attacks, and, "Their families often did not consider these young men religious zealots," the commission reported, based on briefings by Saudi authorities.

  23. A reluctant leading man

&quot;Everyone wants to be Cary Grant," Cary Grant is supposed to have said. "Even I want to be Cary Grant." But who wants to be Hugh Grant? Not him. He finds this "Hugh Grant creation" that has supplanted him in the world bewildering. And he's not crazy about the pressure, the tabloid hostility, the "stalky" fans or the possibility he'll drag the whole business out too long and end up a parody of himself, either.
