7. 12/6/2012-Dave Brubeck

I'm a big Dave Brubeck fan. I say am, not was, because his music lives on in my collection. He and Ramsey Lewis turned me on to jazz when I was a teenager with "Take Five" and "The In Crowd" and I've been turned on ever since. Many years ago, Dave played Kingswood-Oxford in West Hartford with his quartet. I don't remember who all the personnel were (I don't have the CD in front of me as I write this) but I know Jack Six was on bass. I went backstage and asked the guys for their autographs and they easily obliged. They were approachable and cordial. I've since found that to be true among the other jazz greats I've met.

  13. City Lights: Brubeck played here right after 9/11

One day in my high school philosophy class, the teacher gave us a list of different methods of expression and asked us to determine which ones constituted language. Among those that ended up in the "no" stack was music, since, we decided, it worked on a subjective level and couldn't relay concrete messages.

  17. Dave Brubeck dies at 91; jazz legend

In the strait-laced Eisenhower 1950s, Dave Brubeck seemed, on one hand, deeply conventional. He didn't drink, smoke or take drugs. He favored expressions like "baloney!" and "you bet" over ruder alternatives. He had a prodigious work ethic that had been...
