  5. Lyric Opera brings fresh approach to Puccini's 'La Boheme'

    Without fanfare, Lyric Opera has been systematically retiring elderly opera productions that have outlived their usefulness or have simply worn out with age. A prime candidate for junking was the 1972 Pier Luigi Pizzi production of Puccini's "La Boheme," a kind of corporate apartment house that has seen countless occupants, worthy and not so worthy, over the years. Recent revivals made that dingy and faded show no easier to live with.

    The Harris Theater was a riot of color as more than 1,400 attendees, many wearing traditional Indian garb, arrived for the opening-night performance of "Sita Ram" on Dec. 14. The Chicago Children's Choir, the Lookingglass Theatre Company and the Natya Dance Theatre produced the sacred Hindu love story.     Undeterred by drenching rains, a crowd of several thousand began milling around the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park hours before the start of the free Chicago Symphony Orchestraconcert Friday evening.&nbsp;Nobody knew at the time, of course, that within 24 hours the orchestra musicians would be on strike, having failed to reach agreement with management on a new labor contract to replace the one that expired Sept. 16.
