1. When the sun, and mayor, pop up for the arts

Each and every year in Chicago, there is a moment when the problems of the city seem to fall away and everything seems doable and winnable again. It is a moment inextricably tied to the weather. Spring always comes later than even the worst-case scenario. But there's always one day — an hour, even — when it finally arrives with such blazing force you know winter is dead and buried for the year. That's when a smart politician knows to pop up outdoors.

  3. CSO series explores connections between nature and culture

For ages, mankind has been fascinated by rivers, not simply as natural resources and avenues of commercial conveyance, but also as symbols, metaphors and ideas. Countless artists, composers, writers and thinkers have pondered the significance of these wondrous bodies of water and how they impact on culture, society, geopolitics and, closer to our own time, the very future of our planet.

  5. CSO's Citizen Musician seeks right note

A little more than two years ago, the curtain lifted on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra-led Citizen Musician initiative, and CSO Association President Deborah Rutter told an overflow crowd at the Chicago Cultural Center: “All of you are citizen musicians. We consider you our foot soldiers in the movement.”

  11. Lyric Opera brings fresh approach to Puccini's 'La Boheme'

Without fanfare, Lyric Opera has been systematically retiring elderly opera productions that have outlived their usefulness or have simply worn out with age. A prime candidate for junking was the 1972 Pier Luigi Pizzi production of Puccini's "La Boheme," a kind of corporate apartment house that has seen countless occupants, worthy and not so worthy, over the years. Recent revivals made that dingy and faded show no easier to live with.

The Chicago Children's Choir, the Lookingglass Theatre Company and the Natya Dance Theatre produced the sacred Hindu love story. Nearly 200 performers took to the stage for this musical extravaganza that emphasizes morality, multiculturalism and the power of love.

  17. Richly stocked Beethoven Fest is city's best-kept cultural secret, so far

Although the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth won't arrive until 2020, George Lepauw isn't about to wait eight years to celebrate the German composer's titanic musical achievement, or the profound influence his music has exerted on the evolution of Western classical music.

  19. Muti, CSO open tour with lusty 'Carmina Burana' at Carnegie Hall

NEW YORK – It wasn't the tumultuous ovation that went on into the night following the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's first Carnegie Hall concert under then-music director Georg Solti back in 1970, but it was loud and it was instantaneous.

  23. Before strike, it's 'singing in the rain' at Millennium Park for CSO

Undeterred by drenching rains, a crowd of several thousand began milling around the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park hours before the start of the free Chicago Symphony Orchestraconcert Friday evening. Nobody knew at the time, of course, that within 24 hours the orchestra musicians would be on strike, having failed to reach agreement with management on a new labor contract to replace the one that expired Sept. 16. But on Friday the only dark clouds were the ones over the park.
