1. People Like Us

Alex Kurtzman is making his directorial debut. He and his writing partner did the fun Cowboys & Aliens and the last Star Trek. That Captain Kirk – Chris Pine – gets transported to Los Angeles, where he gets the sad news his dad dies. He was a well-known record producer, who would take him to the park but sit in the car listening to the latest demo from Kajagoogoo.

  3. Mysterious Forces: The Wood Brothers play Ridgefield Playhouse on May 18

<span style="font-size: medium;">A Wood Brothers show can veer off into a number of different, closely related musical territories. It’s one part intimate, singer-songwriter showcase, with Oliver Wood’s well-crafted compositions and whiskey-honed voice front and center and rich harmonies all over the place. It’s another part jam-band rock, with stinging solo bursts from Oliver’s guitar, and especially with the contributions of bassist Chris Wood, who made his name in the music business with groove-jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood. And it’s a third part straight-up, chug-along blues-rock, with Oliver’s distorted slide guitar slicing through the mix. The whole package cuts along the grains of several complementary traditions of American roots music — blues, soul, gospel, folk. It depends what you’re listening for.

  11. Historical home studio

Like most professional musicians these days, singer-songwriter-guitarist Joe Henry has a home studio where he produces records for himself as well as other artists, which — unlike most at-home recordings — include recent Grammy-winning albums by veteran troubadour Ramblin’ Jack Elliott (2009's “A Stranger Here”) and string-band revivalists the Carolina Chocolate Drops (2010's “Genuine Negro Jig”).

  13. Jaimoe's Jasssz Band plays Bridge Street Live in Collinsville on Dec. 17

<span style="font-size: medium;">There’s more to the story of Jaimoe, the drummer formerly known as Jai Johanny Johanson (or “Johnie,” as his parents called him), than his long-standing affiliation with the Allman Brothers Band. Years before his fateful run-in with guitarist Duane Allman in 1969, the Mississippi native backed legendary Stax duo Sam and Dave, Percy Sledge, Patti LaBelle and the Blue Bells, the 5 Stairsteps, Brenda and the Tabulations and other rhythm and blues. Curtis Mayfield, taken by Jaimoe’s mastery of New Orleans rhythms, offered him a job with the Impressions (he passed). In 1966, Jaimoe embarked on a 42-day tour with Otis Redding (the band took only a single night off); that’s him on Redding’s In Person at the Whiskey a Go-Go, the recording of a show that helped set Redding’s star in motion.
