1. Community Commentary: Bill Medley still garners that lovin' feeling

I've been going to see Bill Medley since he and Bobby Hatfield did the club circuit back in the '60s. He was always my favorite Righteous Brother, though Bobby was a soulful inspiration too. But it was Bill's deep, velvety smooth and emotionally stirring...

  13. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings have four things going for them

The volume seemed to be turning up: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings were moving away from acoustic austerity, growing comfortable rocking out. Their last album, "Soul Journey," saw these Nashville alt-folkies jolting their sound with electricity and a backbeat. Rawlings has stepped out as a producer — indie rockers Bright Eyes, the shambling Old Crow Medicine Show — and the duo guested on the Decemberists' breakout, "The King Is Dead." Could this mid-career acoustic duo — in its first release in eight years — be ready for a similar lunge into the mainstream?

  19. Weekend's best bet: Thrice at Recher Theatre

The remnants of pop-emo's heyday (the early aughts, let's say) are mainly carcasses, reunion tours and/or disappointing new albums that make fans wish their old favorite group would stop tarnishing its legacy. Thrice is an exception. The Orange County, Calif. quartet has evolved into an ambitious rock band that's more prog than punk. But there's still muscle to these songs, and even small, fleeting reminders of the group's hardcore roots. For proof, check out the band's set at Recher Theatre Saturday night, a more adrenaline-based show than the Arctic Monkeys/Smith Westerns gig at Rams Head Live that same night. La Dispute, O'Brother and Moving Mountains will also perform.
