  1. Revisiting the flickering poetry of Bruce Conner

In a two-night event at separate venues, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, REDCAT and the Los Angeles Filmforum present two programs of the film work of artist Bruce Conner, who passed away in 2008 at 74. This is an increasingly rare opportunity to see the work of this deeply influential filmmaker, who was a notorious stickler regarding the exhibition of his films. The artist's widow, Jean Conner, and longtime friend Dennis Hopper will attend both events.

  3. Scott Walker, musical mystery man

The early scenes of the documentary look like some lost reel from "This Is Spinal Tap," spanning what seems like half of rock history -- complete with hem lengths and haircuts. But the protagonist is not a metalhead but a Zelig-like figure: Here he is as...

  5. Scars on Broadway's Daron Malakian takes a read of the times

"I DON'T get it when people complain that baseball games are too long," says Daron Malakian, watching the action from a seat behind home plate at Dodger Stadium during one of the team's recent home games. "This is my favorite place in the world. I don't care how long it goes, I'll be here to the end."

  7. Mills College, a school without walls

For the last seven decades, Mills College, which will celebrate the renovation of its gorgeous Spanish-style concert hall with a gala concert Feb. 21, has provided a haven for a remarkable number of cutting-edge composers. No matter how academically unsuitable some might have seemed, they have flocked to its manicured sylvan campus tucked behind the intersection of two ugly freeways in a nondescript section of the Oakland foothills. And whether or not anyone has noticed, they have broken new ground.

  9. Coldplay turns up the heat with 'Viva la Vida'

CHRIS MARTIN was on the floor working out the knots. As his handlers hovered, the usually affable Coldplay singer stretched out on the carpet in a dim and airless room backstage at the Jimmy Kimmel show. It was hours before show-time and the singer's muscles were tight and his expression sour. Finally, he looked up with pleading eyes. "Can we escape? Let's go somewhere else. Maybe some place with trees? I have a car and a driver . . ."

He's singing from the perspective of a freshly deposed king, reflecting on the delights of his authoritarian reign, but the line also works to describe Martin's stature as a musician.

  17. 'The Son's Room'

    Times Film Critic
"The Son's Room" is heartbreaking and not. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes and a top contender for the best foreign language Oscar, it is a measured, decorous, at times pat film that manages to be quietly moving because it touches on something real....

One way to appreciate the new U2 album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (Interscope) -- perhaps the only way to appreciate it -- is to pretend the last 15 years didn't happen. It marks a retreat from innovation and daring, and re-immerses the Irish...
