1. Dogs have a night out at Ellicott City bar's 'Yappy Hour'

Hagrid, a 9-year-old bichon frise, got to celebrate his birthday with a night out on the town for the first time this year. At the edge of the patio leading into Jilly's, a bar and grill in Ellicott City, Hagrid met Saba, a 4-month-old mixed breed who was just recently adopted from an animal shelter.

  7. Last-minute show alert! Reggae great Yellowman to play show at Virginia Beach on Aug. 9

Great shows have been sneaking into our area recently. On Sunday, rockers Band of Horses played to a sold-out house at the Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach. That hastily organized show was announced little more than 48 hours before the music started. (Tickets sold out in just 14 hours, a promoter told me).

  15. SuperHeavy mixes up Jagger rock, Marley rhythms and more

On a recent summer day at the Paramount lot, the five members of the group SuperHeavy played along to a recording of their first single, "Miracle Worker," as a camera crane swooped over an assembled crowd of a few hundred and the music boomed. Onstage in the middle of the lot's faux urban streetscape, Mick Jagger lipped the words and moved like himself while the big crowd bounced along to an upbeat, dance hall-inspired pop song.
