3. Not at Coachella? Don't worry — neither are these shows

It's April, which is good news for the roughly 180,000 music fans who have tickets to the sold-out Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, set for the weekends of April 12 and April 19. But for those who find themselves shut out of the annual festival in the desert, there are numerous noteworthy concerts happening closer to home. Most even feature modern amenities such as air conditioning, and many, in fact, include artists performing at Coachella.

7. Steve Lopez: Searching for the song of L.A.

L.A. NOW
Is there a song for and about Los Angeles that tops all the others? Judging by early reader reaction to my column about a local musician named Justin Chart, who set out to write the definitive local anthem, I think......

9. "American Idiot" Comes to the Bushnell in Hartford

Certain, shall we say, issues hampering frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's ability to perform led Green Day to postpone their their fall tour behind ¡UNO!, ¡DOS! and ¡TRE!, which included a Mohegan Sun date (now on for April 6). Luckily, American Idiot, a Broadway musical based on Green Day's Grammy-winning album of the same name, has made the rounds of theaters across the country. Head to the Bushnell this week to hear tunes like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Holiday" pieced together as a narrative about three lifelong, surburban friends in pursuit of their rock dreams. (Then, of course, go see the band in April; Best Coast opens.)

15. Sam McDonald's favorite discs of 2012

I can't procrastinate anymore. It's the eleventh hour of the final day of the year. Enough of the inner dialogs and long bouts of second guessing. It's time to man up and name my favorite albums of 2012.

21. Tavi talks about the new Rookie book and her Los Angeles visit

At the age of 15, fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson noticed that there wasn’t a magazine that tapped into the real, honest, substantial, and oftentimes comedic, experiences that come with being a teenage girl. So, she set out to change that — creating the online publication <a href="http://rookiemag.com">Rookie Magazine. While it may have seemed like an overwhelming task for any teenager to tackle, Tavi already knew what it took to be on the frontline of a creative endeavor (she started her fashion blog at age 11 and was featured in Teen Vogue, French Vogue and The New York Times Magazine).

23. The Darlin opener for Best Coast brought the energy

Best Coast’s opening band, Tennessee’s Those Darlins, had great stage presence. Maybe better than the main act. Jessi Darlin wore a gold-sequined onesie as she climbed monitor speakers and stared the crowd down with big round eyes. The lead guitarist’s sultry bandmate, guitarist Nikki Darlin, was serious but provocative in red lipstick and a grungy black outift – but I’m a sucker for women in a band, usually.
