3. Movie Crowds Lowest in 16 Years

Staff Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood has more tricks in its bag than ever with digital 3-D and other new film tools. Yet as the images on screen get bigger and better, movie crowds keep shrinking — down to a 16-year low as 2011's film lineup fell well...

5. Reel China: U.S. film producers are engaging the Chinese

China bought $91.9-billion worth of U.S. goods last year, including boatloads of medical devices, precious metals and electrical equipment. But when it comes to America's most celebrated cultural export — Hollywood movies — crossing China's borders has proved more difficult than climbing the Great Wall.

7. Is 'Man of Steel' super for business?

The fake 7-Eleven gas station will soon be cleared out to make way for an Oktoberfest celebration, and the Smallville's Best Pizza sign will eventually be taken off of Uncle Lar's Pizza restaurant, but the city of Plano, which last month hosted 14 days of filming of "Man of Steel," is not ready to say goodbye to Superman just yet — if ever.

9. The evolving images of 9/11

The first screening of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" came just weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11. The movie had been in the works for years, the first in a trilogy based on novels that had been written decades earlier, of course, by an Englishman named J.R.R. Tolkien during Hitler's rise to power and World War II. And yet the first minute of the film delivered a queasy jolt of immediacy, a chill of recognition. It opened with no image, and very faint background music, little but a black screen and Cate Blanchett's mournful voice, reciting what sounded like, that autumn day, either a prayer or the most poetic 9/11 editorial no one had written yet:

11. Film review: Nothing more than meets the eye on new 'Transformers'

When I review a sequel, I usually open by talking about the proud history of the franchise.
Special to The Herald-Mail
When I review a sequel, I usually open by talking about the proud history of the franchise. The history of the "Transformers" franchise is nothing to be proud of. The '80s cartoon was a glorified toy commercial, the original 2007 film was one of...

21. Reel Critics: A-listers shine quietly in 'Larry Crowne'

23. Word of Mouth: 'Zookeeper' may have been caged too long

A little more than a year ago, the makers of "Zookeeper" took the Kevin James comedy to the AMC Ontario Mills 30 multiplex for a test screening. The talking-animals film had been scheduled to be released in October 2010, but the Sony Pictures brass were so electrified by the audience feedback — the marks from kids were so good that one executive thought that the data must be wrong and needed to be recalculated — that the studio decided to move "Zookeeper" into the heart of this summer's box-office battle.
