  1. Ford's Theatre: Obama invited, expected

    The Swamp
by Mark Silva In pursuit of his homages to Abraham Lincoln, President Barack Obama's expected appearance at Ford's Theatre tonight may strike some as, well, dramatic. The actor James Earl Jones and CBS news anchor Katie Couric are among the......

  3. Director William Friedkin comes home

William Friedkin, the director of “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” a pair of acclaimed Tracy Letts adaptations (“Bug” and “Killer Joe”) and author of “The Friedkin Connection,” a new memoir about his 50-plus-year filmmaking career, answered the door of his hotel room. It was a lousy room. “Small,” he said simply. He stepped aside to let me in, looking disappointed and resigned. He wore large, 1970s-style eyeglasses, sneakers, black socks and a black shirt. He tugged his chinos high above his waist. This is not much bigger than the one-room apartment that he grew up in at the corner of Foster Avenue and Sheridan Road, he said.

  5. Baseball films to add to your viewing lineup

"After all them years, all that double talk — the white man's finally moving in," says one Negro League barnstormer to another, after a teammate gets a call from the Brooklyn Dodgers about a historic opportunity.

  7. Harrison Ford steals the show in `42'

Harrison Ford has always been a thief.
Harrison Ford has always been a thief. On the screen. In "Star Wars," Han Solo was on the run for nefarious deeds from the moment we met him. In the "Indiana Jones" universe, we first see Mr. Jones as he steals a priceless artifact and is almost...

  9. Let's make some rules on movie remakes

Normally I don't complain about the proliferation of movie remakes any more than I complain about movie sequels and communal tables in restaurants — what's the point?

  11. Movie secrets are there, in the script!

You know what &quot;Star Wars" is about? I mean, <em>really</em> about? Vietnam. It's a critical allegory of the war: The Rebels are the scrappy Viet Cong, hastily assembled, devoted and relentless; the Empire is the American military, tripped up by an enemy using guerrilla tactics and inferior weaponry. Oh, there's more here, but...

  13. Yes, another surly Harrison Ford interview

If getting reamed by the notoriously grumpy <strong><span class=&quot;runtimeTopic">Harrison Ford</span></strong> is a rite of passage for entertainment reporters, you could say I was finally initiated into the club March 18. In fact, you could say a few Chicago reporters were initiated that night.

  15. Move is a real scream for Berwyn collectibles shop Horrorbles

You're alone in the far back corner of a basement on Roosevelt Road, the air choked with the dank smell of age. Above you, a Berwyn storefront. Around you, the cluttered office of its owner. What kind of maniac intentionally keeps his desk in the far back corner of a musty basement, removed from any possibility of sunlight, the otherworldly scream of a heating duct the only sound to keep him company?

  17. Politicians could use lesson in today's popular culture

We identify with popular culture more easily than we identify with politics, that's why pop culture is so popular, and a lot more interesting than government affairs. Hence the reason Barack Obama's speech last week took a backseat to his mixed Star Wars/...

  19. Now with a bigger audience, 'Game Show' needs to up its game

THEATER REVIEW: &quot; The Game Show Show ... and Stuff!" at the Mercury Theater &#9733;&#9733; ... If you're one of these people who lament the decline in knowledge of civic affairs, the first event at the Mercury Theater on Friday night would have had you pulling your hair out.

  21. Shatner's world is out there, but worth the trip

&quot;Meet my co-chair," William Shatner observed from the stage of Auditorium Theatre Friday night, whereupon a seat on wheels was flung in the general direction of the man who once flew the Starship Enterprise. Ah, such a night for cutting-edge comedy. "My sister had an exorcism," Shatner observed a bit later on, "but she couldn't afford to pay for it, so they repossessed her." You'd think with material like that he'd have been here all week, but, alas, it was just Friday night.

  23. Oscars and American history: True, or true enough?

    A modest proposal: Movies exploring some aspect of American history, such as &ldquo;Argo,&rdquo; &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; and &ldquo;Zero Dark Thirty,&rdquo; should leave off the &ldquo;based on a true story&rdquo; or &ldquo;inspired by true events&rdquo; language and stick to what &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; screenwriter Tony Kushner advocates: a clear, simple and proud declaration of &ldquo;historical fiction.&rdquo;
