1. It's still music to Dan Wallin's ears

Just before noon on a clear fall day, the Newman stage on the 20th Century Fox lot is alive with bright lights, hovering microphones and a full 105-piece orchestra. It's one of the final scoring sessions for "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," and director Brad Bird and composer Michael Giacchino are listening closely to the music when a man with a snow-white ponytail and baseball cap leans over to whisper in Giacchino's ear. The composer nods and asks the conductor, Tim Simonec, to take it from the top, with a shade less emphasis on the piano.

13. The virtues of setting and shooting a film in Connecticut

A number of high-profile dramas have been shot and set amongst the immaculately manicured lawns and well-preserved historical homes of the Connecticut suburbs, among them Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road, the movie Kate Winslet should have won the Oscar for, and (although not explicitly stated) Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows, in which Rock Hudson does a bang-up job of looking like he's actually into women (in this case Jane Wyman).

The Big Picture
Go ahead and gag with a spoon. It's not even officially summer yet, but the Hollywood Reporter's Gregg Kilday has already weighed in with a dreary thumbsucker about the early front-runners for 2012 Oscar stardom. I'm with the unnamed Oscar......

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel

19. Actress has made a home here

Kate Arrington seems not a bit actress-y, just interesting.
Kate Arrington seems not a bit actress-y, just interesting. For one thing, she's not particularly concerned about how she looks. For another, through unlikely serendipity, lifestyle czarina Martha Stewart was an early backer of Arrington's stage career....

21. In scripted television, fashion rules

Television takes the spotlight starting Monday at the upfronts in New York City, when most networks will announce which shows live and die. Many decisions will hinge on issues of substance — ratings and cost and critical acclaim. But no one should discount the role that style plays in a successful show.
