10. Oscar nominees take a look back with 'New Nostalgia'

A couple of years ago, Bruce Sheridan, chair of the film program at Columbia College, noticed a curious thing happening. A few of the film majors who interned on the Chicago production of "The Dark Knight" had started making their student films and, as expected,Christopher Nolan's brooding, zeitgeisty, state-of-the-union-address of a superhero epic was a big influence. Less expected was the sort of movies it inspired. Film students have always gravitated to the shadows and stark lighting of classic noir; and Batman is the most noir-y of superheroes. Sheridan planned to see lots of noir. What he got were wide open urban spaces.

  12. Crimes committed by Ferris Bueller during his "day off"

Since 1986, Ferris Bueller has been the poster child of what can happen when playing hooky from school. He made it on national television, managed to wreck an expensive car, and even became the center of attention in a massive parade.

  16. Film Review: 'New Year's Eve'

It was only last year that director Garry Marshall's “Valentine's Day” raked in enough moolah to reach 23 on Box Office Mojo's highest-grossing “romantic comedy” list. That was apparently enough to trigger a follow-up — not, technically, a sequel — so Marshall (“Pretty Woman,” “Young Doctors in Love”) has reteamed with screenwriter Katherine Fugate for “New Year's Eve,” which follows the same template down to the smallest detail: Cast a score of stars in a dozen or so seemingly unrelated stories, all about love in its many forms. Then, during the course of one compact day, slowly reveal how the stories actually are related, even as life lessons are learned and happy endings are tidily achieved.

  18. Movie review: In 'New Year's Eve,' we want a rainbow, but get shades of gray

“New Year’s Eve” is a movie that if nothing else has a lot going on. The film consists of multiple stories each with its own handful of recognizable actors. The logic is that everything can’t possibly fail at once and everyone should find something to enjoy. It’s a faulty logic because the variety of characters and storylines are all products of the same uninspired writing and direction. What we want is a rainbow, what we get is multiple shades of grey.
