  3. Oscars 2013 preview: MacFarlane, 'Argo' hope to steal the show

"Argo" heads into Sunday's Oscars with the wind at its back, but Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" has the most nominations of any film -- a dozen. Will Ben Affleck's 1970s Iran drama make it a sweep, or are there some surprises in order?

  7. Overlooked screenplays this Oscar season

In 1945 Raymond Chandler wrote a screed against Hollywood, and Hollywood screenwriting, for the Atlantic Monthly. &quot; An industry with such vast resources and such magic techniques should not become dull so soon," said the man who later characterized his adopted residence to the south, La Jolla, Calif., as "nothing but a climate." In the Atlantic he vented: "An art which is capable of making all but the very best plays look trivial and contrived, all but the very best novels verbose and imitative, should not so quickly become wearisome to those who attempt to practice it with something else in mind than the cash drawer."

  9. The story of the Oscars

While it's true that there's only so much anyone can say about the Oscars, remember it can be said again and again. As a reader (and writer), I know by now that there are 10 abiding Oscar stories. Here they are, all in a single article: The history...

  11. A reflection on the merits of the historical novel vs. the historical film

Although there will presumably be no hoop skirts or beaver-skin top hats on the red carpet, this year's Academy Awards are putting a spotlight on American history. I've spent years studying, writing and teaching about the fight to end slavery, so I was excited when Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner brought that history to the screen in the Oscar-nominated &ldquo;Lincoln.&rdquo; But for all the glamour of a cinematic blockbuster, watching a film like &ldquo;Lincoln&rdquo; reminds me that the novel as a literary form has distinct advantages when it comes to deepening how Americans today understand our history.

  13. Commentary: Sorry, but 'Argo' shouldn't win best picture Oscar

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of "Argo." I've seen it twice, enjoyed it mightily both times, and put it on my 10-best list, where it belongs. I called it "a smart, complex and engaging film that crackles with energy and purpose," and I stand by those...

  15. Oscars 2013: 'Argo' generates most heat, but can 'Lincoln' catch it?

With the Oscars finally upon us Sunday, it's do-or-die for the movies ranked in the L.A. Times Data Desk's HeatMeter, which tallies points at events throughout the season to gauge the overall traction of people and films. With Ben Affleck's &quot;Argo" piling up the wins, it's taken the lead in the overall film race (which incorporates all wins for a movie, and for everyone from directors to actors to cinematographers).

  23. Connecticut's Oscar Favorites From Those In The Know

The Academy Awards bring out the critic in everyone. It starts when the nominations are announced &mdash; <em>&quot;Whaddya mean, Ben Affleck wasn't nominated?"</em> &mdash; and lasts long after Oscar night. That annual ritual takes place Sunday night and will be televised starting at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. (That's the actual ceremony; the red carpet fashion show starts at 7 p.m.) To give a little inside perspective to the glitzy festivities, we thought we'd ask a few Connecticut residents &mdash; people whose lives revolve around the entertainment industry &mdash; producers, directors, cinema managers, actors, costumers &mdash; about the Oscars and the 2012 movie year in general. What impressed them? What trends did they notice? Who should win? Who will win? Let's let the experts riff ...
