1. 'Cloud Atlas'? Shrug ★★ 1/2

A big-budget film's marketing mission is simple: Eliminate the idea of an unsuspecting audience. Did people know what they were getting when they got "Transformers: Dark of the Moon"? Yes. They got what they were shown in the 30-second ads, over and over and over.

  7. Not just the Coens: Directing teams past and present

Joel and Ethan Coen just made Academy Award history with their tandem nomination for best director for "No Country for Old Men." The siblings are the first brother directing team to be nominated in that category. And if they win, they will become the first team to receive the directing Oscar since Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins won for 1961's best picture winner, "West Side Story."

  9. Movie Review: 'Speed Racer'

"Speed Racer" bemoans corporately financed entertainment for the masses while serving as a fine example thereof. So as big, blaring blockbusters go, it's a bit of a hypocrite. It is also self-congratulatory. When Susan Sarandon's Mom Racer (think Jane...

  13. 'The Matrix Revolutions'

Once upon a time in 1999, the summer was supposed to belong to George Lucas and "The Phantom Menace," his resurrected "Star Wars" series. But after "The Matrix" hit, Lucas' future was yesterday's news. Suddenly, the action wasn't in light sabers and an embarrassment like Jar Jar Binks, but in slow-crawling bullets, high-flying warriors, latex and leather, religious allusions, postmodern aperçus, recycled future shock and heroes that looked like Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss. That year, the brave new world of the action movie blazed in Reeves' sunglasses, and it looked cool.

  23. 'V for Vendetta'

"V for Vendetta" is not a movie of ideas so much as it is an idea mall. By the time you've gotten through it, you feel spent, loaded down and more than a little disoriented. Part of the problem is that the movie's big concepts — violence begets violence, absolute power corrupts absolutely, everything is connected, my terrorist is your freedom fighter, etc. — are pithy, brief and irrefutable enough to embroider on throw pillows. But its moral and philosophical stances amount to a free-for-all.
